Summary: An isomer of 1,2-dichloroethylene, trans-1,2-dichloroethylene is used as a refrigerant and a solvent. It is also used in the production of polymers and organic compounds. It may exist as an environmental degradation product of trichloroethylene following breakdown by microorganisms. It exists as a colorless liquid at room temperature with a solubility in water of 3500 mg/L at 25 C. It has a density of 1.2565 g/mL at 20 C. Upon decomposition it produces hydrogen chloride gas. A Koc value of 59 indicates high mobility within soil. Biodegradation half-lives of 26 – 27 days were measured in natural water. Biodegradation under anaerobic conditions is also an important fate in water.
