Summary: Mecoprop is a carboxylic acid and an aromatic ether. It is a member of the chlorophenoxy herbicides, and that is its primary use. It has a solubility in water of 880 mg/L at 25 C and a density of 1.28 g/mL. Upon decomposition it produces gaseous hydrogen chloride and carbon oxides. It has an acid dissociation constant of pKa = 3.78 and is corrosive towards metals. Mecoprop has high mobility in soil and has a Koc value ranging from 5- 43. Photolysis is expected to be a major method of natural removal in water sources. Improper disposal is a major source of environmental pollution.
