Summary: Ibuprofen is a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is a derivative of propionic acid. It is one of the most common over-the-counter drugs but it also available by prescription. It is a monocarboxylic acid with a pKa = 5.3. It has a solubility of 21 mg/L in water at 25 C. Close to 100% of the dose taken is metabolized and excreted within 24 hours. A Koc value of 3400 indicates ibuprofen has low mobility in soil. Within surface waters ibuprofen has a half-life of 20 days and biodegradation is expected to play a role in it’s removal from the environment.
