Atrazine

IUPAC Name: 1-Chloro-3-ethylamino-5-isopropylamino-2,4,6-triazine

MCL: 0.003 ppm

Source: Used as an herbicide to contain weed populations.

Summary: Atrazine is a synthetic pesticide used to control weed populations. It is soluble in water up to 34.7 mg/L at 25 C and has a density of 1.23 g/mL at 22 C. Upon decomposition it produces gaseous hydrogen chloride and nitrogen oxides. It has a dissociation constant of pKa = 1.60. Half-lives of reactions and degradation within water and soil are highly variable but it appears that hydrolysis under low pH conditions are favorable for degradation.
