Summary: 2,4-D, also known as 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, is an organic compound used in formulations for herbicides. It may be used to control plant growth or to eradicate them completely. The chemical was a constituent in Agent Orange. It is soluble in water up to 677 mg/L at 25 C and has a density of 1.42 g/mL at 25 C. 2,4-D has an acid dissociation constant of pKa = 2.73. A Koc value in the range of 20 – 136 indicates high mobility within soil that may cause leaching to groundwater. Biodegradation is expected to be a major fate process in water and soil. Environmental degradation may form transformation products such as 2,4-Dichloroanisole and 2,4-Dichlorophenol.
