The compound is also naturally occurring as a byproduct of petroleum refining processes. It exists as a component in gasoline and had been detected in exhaust from automobiles. Runoff from use as a pesticide may lead to the compound persisting as an environmental contaminant. It is soluble in water up to 735 mg/L at 20 C and has a density of 0.6149 g/mL at 25 C. 1,3-Butadiene is classified by the EPA as a Hazardous Air Pollutant (HAPs). A Koc value of 40 indicates high mobility within soil. Hydrolysis and biodegradation are expected to be major fate processes within water and soil.
